Tiki culture took off in the 1930’s when Don the Beachcomber opened his self-named Polynesian-themed bar and restaurant in southern California. Don quickly became famous for his unique rum and fruit juice cocktails, making his restaurant a hot spot for celebrities and Hollywood elites. Interest in Tiki culture exploded after WWII, when soldiers returned from overseas and brought back exotic stories of island life.
People fell in love with the escapist culture and enjoyed taking a mini-vacation to their local Tiki bar; a place that they could watch live Polynesian performances while sipping drinks from coconuts and hollowed pineapples. And Honi Honi Tiki Cocktail Lounge brought the authentic culture to Hong Kong in 2012.
From July, they are going to present “Tales of Tiki”, a new pop-up series to be held for two months, every two months. As part of a new faction of Honi Honi and purveyors in all things bold and audacious, Rum Rebels would like to let customers experience a short “vacay” from everyday reality in the heart of the concrete jungle!
This episode’s experience introduces the cocktails from the legendary forefathers of tiki culture Don The Beachcomber and Trader Vic, as well as revealing new “hostile” take on cocktail creations from Honi Honi’s new Bar Manager Pawel Mikuesk. Created to be shared, some of the new limited edition cocktails include “Zombie Apocalypse” and “All Out Mai Tai” to be shared between 2-3 enthusiasts.
